Viva fights but succumbs to EB Print E-mail
Sunday, 25 November 2007
Viva Kerala put up a spirited show against mighty East Bengal in their inaugural I-League match, but were denied a point.

Viva Kerala fought well to resist the East Bengal attack, but could not withstand the pressure for the whole 90 minutes.

The Kerala outfit put up a spirited display during the first half of the match and the East Bengal attack led by Brazilian Edmilson and South African World Cupper MacDonald Mukansi found it extremely difficult to sneak through the sturdy Viva defence.

But on the other hand, Viva did not pose a serious threat to the East Bengal goalmouth. Good performances by Baba Tunde, K.V. Lalu and goalkeeper M.V. Nelson did not prove enough to snatch a point from the mighty Kolkata brigade.

While the first half ended 0-0, Viva's players got tired in the second half and some wise substitutions by EB's coach were injecting new life into the host's tactics.

Edmilson (74th) and Alvito D'Cunha (79') managed to score for East Bengal and thus made the scoreline 2-0.

Hopefully, Viva can pose a similar challenge to the other Kolkata giant, Mohun Bagan on Thursday. With teamspirit and fighting spirit, Viva might travel to Mumbai without empty hands.

Viva: Nelson - Rose, Khelemba, Tutu, Tabia, Sajeesh -  Birua, James Singh, Lalu - Abbey, Baba Tunde.
