Bimal Birua back with Viva Print E-mail
Monday, 29 June 2009
teamnews.jpgFormer TFA cadet and Viva Kerala player Bimanyu Bimal Birua will return to Viva Kerala after having played for New Dehli Heroes last season. In Viva's maiden I-League season 2007/2008 he was already part of the team, but failed to impress.

Why then has the management decided to recall him? On the one hand, Viva has a vacancy to fill on the left flank since Shahbas Saleel left the club. And Birua has some experience playing in the top division (Viva Kerala, JCT). He also has a very strong left foot. On the other hand, he is not a decisive player who influences the team's game on the pitch in a major way. Lack of options might be the reason that lead to his signing.
Nevertheless, we wish Bimalall the best this year as a Viva Kerala player.

I was quite surprised at the signing of Bimal.

He has
been around for sometime ever since his graduation from TFA
in 2004. While others from his batch like Subrata Pal,
Gouramangi Singh, Debrata Roy, Subhashish Roy Choudhury, et
al have played in the national colours, Bimal has not really
impressed anyone.

If it is for filling the vacant slot of
Shahbas Saleel, this is a POOR choice. Vacancies are to be
filled with players of better or atleast the same calibre
(especially when you are promoted!!!).

Sumita Thapa
currently signed by Viva Kerala plays on the left flank
(mostly as a defender/wing back). Keralite and former
Indian national player, Muttath Suresh (who is still
available on free transfer) also plays on the left flank
(mostly as a defender/wing back). However, had we signed
Suresh, given his experience, he can play up in midfield
with Sumit playing at the back (and switched positions

Unfortunately my comment was not complete...

...(and
switched positions during matches). Viva could have had one
of the best left flanks in the I-League.

There are a few
more top notch Indian players available for free
transfer.

Alas!! Many of the signings made by Viva are
poor choices. Fellow clubs that got promoted like
Salgaocar, Pune FC and Lajong (they also have a sponsor and
does not seem like the economic environment has impacted
them - despite being from Shillong!!!) Even second division
clubs like ONGC and Mohammedan have strenghtned their squads
for this season.

Viva Kerala needs a strategist!
