The favourite player of many Keralite fans, Nigerian Badmus Baba Tunde, will return to Viva Kerala to bolster their attack ahead of the inaugural I-League. Apart from Baba, the management is looking at other options to strenghthen the team.
Towards the end of the last season, Baba Tunde decided to seek greener pastures at Goa's Salgaocar SC. However, Viva's goalgetter failed to establish himself at the ambitious Goan team. Thus the Viva management was cautious at first, but nevertheless struck a deal with the Nigerian during the just finished Durand Cup which was held in Delhi. After the 1-4 thrashing against Salgaocar, it became clear that the team desperately needs a goal scoring machine upfront. The hopes now rest with Baba Tunde who is very popular in Kerala. Not only the striking department, but also the defence has its weak point and thus Viva invited Ghanaian George Tutu for trials. The defender arrived last Thursday in India and had his first practice session with the team on Friday. "George looks fit! I think he will have acclimatised to Indian conditions within 10 days.", said a confident A.M. Sreedharan. Talks are also going on with such players as Akshay Das, who earlier played for East Bengal, United SC and Calcutta Port Trust. Another Ghanaian striker has been recommended by former FC Kochin goalkeeper Ali Abubakar and is also likely to join the team as a trialist. Coach Sreedharan said that some additions to the squad are unavoidable if the club wants to sustain itself in the Indian I-League. After testing the new trialists, the team management will decide which overseas players Viva will keep, because a club can only sign three foreigners. More updates regarding new players will be published here shortly.
