Viva Kerala FC

Churchill Brothers SC

Summary
Viva had only played Dempo 3 days previously and dropped 2 points today as Churchill snatched a lucky draw in injury time.  Substitute Vimal Pariyar headed in the late equaliser that left a large Calicut crowd disappointed and Viva  players dejected.  Perhaps Sharath or Charles could have cleared the cross but to understand why Viva did not win one needs to look at the other end of the pitch.  As in the previous match against Dempo Viva had opportunities to extend their lead but failed to do so.  The worst culprits this time were Rueben and Sakeer.  The most frustrating aspect of this profligacy is that between these 2 players, at least 12 shots were taken, yet only 1 was on target.  Let's hope Rueben spends the next 10 days shooting; is it worth him doing anything else in training?
Rahul has no such flaws and has been shooting well in training so it was no surprise to see him coolly take on one Churchill defender then smash the ball past Arindam, under the Churchill bar.  Rahul's excellent goal came in the first half after Rueben diffidently turned away from goal when he had a shooting opportunity before setting up the Calicut born player.

Odafa had a quiet afternoon and on this performance it would be difficult to guess that his salary if far in excess of the entire Viva wage bill.  Part of the brilliance of Odafa is his average game but he can suddenly score from nothing situations.  However, in the absence of a goal he looked like an overpaid prima donna who was lucky not to get a second yellow after constant moaning to the referee.  Young Amarwant did well to keep Odafa quiet but in the 15th minute he was turned by the forward who surprisingly put his shot wide.  The enigmatic Charles was not even close to covering Amarwant and rather than apologising for his absence scolded the mistake.
Charles went on to become man-of-the-match with a typically powerful and towering display that has upset the rhythm of every top I-league striker.  However, a leader and organiser he is not and there was much confusion for the first 15 minutes as the defence struggled in the absence of the influential Bello.

Viva have proved the Dempo result was no fluke and a team that is distraught at drawing with the champions must be good.  Viva are now 5 games unbeaten at home, bring on Mahindra United.

Viva: Sharath - Noushad, Charles, Amarwant, Surjith - Sajesh (Karma (Nishad)), Patrick, Sakeer, Rahul - Reuben, Sabeeth (Shibinlal).
