Another disappointing defeat. Again Viva Kerala showed that they can
give any team in India a good game of football but in crucial areas it
was clear which team has a budget 5 times that of their opponents.
The midfield battle perhaps summed up Viva's other problem,
experience. The young Indian trio of Siraj, Sakeer and Karma up
against 3 Indian internationals, with PIO Patrick mostly containing
Brazilian playmaker, Beto.
The young Viva players left their
experienced opponents to walk off the pitch red faced at their
inability to contain the pace and trickery of Siraj and Karma on the
wings. It was the 2 wingers who combined for the goal as Siraj crossed
for Karma to head home an overdue goal that will hopefully be the first
of many. Sakeer showed his class and trickery against a national team
opponent with U23 coach Sukhwinder Singh looking on the only thing
missing from his game was a goal.
In the second half it was a
different story as Dempo patiently kept the ball while Viva sat back
and wasted possession cheaply allowing Dempo to attack. Perhaps it is
easier to be patient if you have strikers like Ranty and Chhetri.
Chettri's movement was superb, pulling out wide and coming deep to
receive the ball causing confusion for those trying to mark him.
Dempo
scored their 3 goals due to Chhetri's skill and gave one present to
their hosts. In the end it could have been more as Viva players
allowed their heads to drop. It also could have been a different story
had Viva been brave enough to take a 2-0 first half lead when they were
on top.
Again there are lots of positives like Amarwant
filling in ably for suspended Charles but Viva are in the relegation
zone and will go down if they do not learn their lessons quickly.
